"Voice of Xiyuan" TCM English Competition
On the morning of 18 July 2025, Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences convened the first "Voice of Xiyuan" TCM English Competition. Under the theme "Share TCM Wisdom in English and Make Xiyuan's Voice Heard Globally", the event showcased the academic depth and cultural appeal of TCM through English presentations. Ten finalists, drawn from clinical, pharmaceutical, nursing and administrative departments, competed in the final round.
Li Kun, Vice-President of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and Li Qiuyan, Party Secretary of Xiyuan Hospital, opened the event with speeches. Representatives from functional offices, clinical departments and the hospital's youth theory study groups attended. More than 50 international guests from Sri Lanka and Guyana observed the competition and cast ballots for the "Xinglin(TCM) International Communication Award".
During the final round, ten contestants vividly illustrated the global value of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) through authentic clinical cases. Sun Lingyun from Oncology Department recounted her cross-border collaboration in "What is the experience of teaching American doctors to use Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine for cancer patients?" Liu Lin of Gastroenterology Department showcased the integration of cutting-edge technology in "Al-Driven Precision Meets TCM Wisdom: Transforming Gastric Precancerous." Zhao Ning from the Pharmacy Department revealed the modern transformation of a classic herb in "When Sparks Fly: A Lygodium japonicum's Journey Across Civilizations." Yang Jiaxi of the Hospital Administration Office traced the timeless journey of a canonical text in "Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases-A Journey Through Time." Dong Fei of Rheumatology Department offered a moving testament to TCM's borderless impact in "When Silence Speaks: A Global Ode to Traditional Chinese Medicine's Healing Power." The remaining finalists also delivered compelling presentations on topics ranging from the global dissemination of TCM culture to the application of its distinctive therapies. Whether rooted in the reverent study of classical texts or focused on technological innovation, every speaker drew upon genuine clinical experiences to fully display the diverse appeal and contemporary relevance of TCM, underscoring Xiyuan Hospital's steady strides in advancing the internationalization of Chinese medicine.
The competition is governed by a dual-track system that marries expert adjudication with real-time audience engagement. The judging panel brings together leading authorities in translation and linguistics, including Huang Yulong, President of the ClCG Academy of Translation and Interpretation; Mu Yang, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Beijing Language and Culture University; Wang Jinghui, doctoral supervisor at Tsinghua University; Li Ran, Deputy Director of the International Training Department at the International and Hong Kong & Macao Training Center of the Party School of the Central Committee of the CPC; and Dr. Elena Colonnello of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. From linguistic precision to cross-cultural resonance, the experts evaluated each entry across multiple dimensions, ultimately awarding two first prizes, four second prizes, and four third prizes. The newly created "Xinglin(TCM) International Communication Award" was decided by live audience vote, spotlighting how powerfully the presentations resonated culturally and how readily they traveled across borders—infusing fresh vitality into the global dissemination of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Traditional Chinese medicine is a priceless jewel of the Chinese nation and an ever more integral part of the world's medical landscape. In all these capacities, the hospital has steadfastly served the nation's diplomatic strategy and propelled the worldwide advance of traditional Chinese medicine.
