On April 15, 2025, under the leadership and with the support of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS), Xiyuan Hospital convened a cooperation and exchange meeting with the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). Attending the meeting were Li Kun, Vice President of CACMS, Li Qiuyan, President of Xiyuan Hospital, Wang Peili and Miao Qing, Vice Presidents of Xiyuan Hospital, Yang Yufei, the academic leader of the Oncology Department, and Zhang Jin, Director of the Disease Prevention Center. At the meeting, both parties embarked on a comprehensive and profound dialogue, delving into critical areas such as the cultivation of general practitioners and the advancement of evidence-based medical research.
Li Kun pointed out that the traditional Chinese medicine concepts of "holistic view" and "prevention of disease" are highly consistent with the cornerstone of Denmark's health system, general medicine, in terms of service philosophy. This provides broad space for the in-depth integration and innovative development of the two. As an important clinical base of CACMS, Xiyuan Hospital has rich experience in clinical research of traditional Chinese medicine, general medical practice, chronic disease management, and international cooperation and exchanges. This visit will open a new chapter in Sino-Danish medical exchanges and bring valuable opportunities to deepen medical cooperation and jointly promote the well-being of the people.
President Li Qiuyan noted that since its inception, Xiyuan Hospital has served as a pivotal gateway for international exchanges in traditional Chinese medicine. In the past two years, it has carried out rich international cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine with Europe. Experts have been sent to Austria, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Denmark for exchanges and study visits. Memorandums of Understanding have been signed with four institutions in Germany and Italy, accumulating rich cooperative experience and talent strength. In the future, it will fully leverage its accumulation in medical care, scientific research, and teaching to promote high-quality cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine between China and Denmark.
Prof. Jesper Bo Nielsen, representing the Danish delegation, introduced the research achievements and advantages of the University of Southern Denmark in general medicine, public health, and medical risk management, and highly praised China's unique coordinated development system of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.
Xu Yun, Deputy Director of the Oncology Department of Xiyuan Hospital, reported on the international integrative medical cooperation of the Oncology Department of Xiyuan Hospital, introduced the concepts and methods of traditional Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of tumors, and the effective international cooperation carried out by the Oncology Department with Norway, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom over the preceding two decades.
The delegation also visited the Cultural Corridor and the Disease Prevention Center of Xiyuan Hospital to gain a deep understanding of the hospital's development process and the construction of its characteristic departments.
Denmark is renowned for its world-class healthcare system, which stands at the forefront of global medical excellence. SDU was established in 1966 and is a top comprehensive university in Denmark, with its affiliated hospitals ranking among the world's top 100. The members of this delegation include Prof. Jesper Bo Nielsen, Head of SDU China Cooperation, Prof. Jens Søndergaard, Head of the GP Unit, SDU, and Ou Tie, Administrative Director of SDU-China Collaboration, Beijing Office. This visit is designed to significantly amplify the collaborative efforts between China and Denmark within the healthcare domain. By forging strategic partnerships with the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and Xiyuan Hospital, it seeks to augment Denmark’s primary care methodologies and catalyze the synergistic evolution of traditional medicine and contemporary medical science.
