Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences 

    Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, covers an area of 60,000 square meters with gross 80,000 square meters of floor space, is located in the east of the Summer Palace and was designated as the first AAA-grade TCM hospital and national model TCM hospital established by the government in 1955. The general Hospital includes the Research Institute of Clinical Medicine, the Institute of Gerontology, and the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. As a medical Insurance-designated hospital, Xiyuan Hospital is a part of International Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine of the World Health Organization (WHO). It includes national TCM Therapeutic Centers of Cardiology, Hematology, Gerontology, Oncology, Digestive Diseases and Respiratory Diseases. Moreover, the Specialty Committees of Hematology and Neurology of Chinese Association of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, the Specialty Committees of ENT & Stomatology of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, China Association of Medicated Diet, and the Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine are attached to the Hospital. Besides, the Hospital was also designated by the Ministry of Public Health as a TCM training base for doctors of Western medicine.
    In the 1950s, more than 30 national outstanding TCM experts (e.g. Wang Wending, Zhao Xiwu, Yue Meizhong, Qian Boxuan, etc.) countrywide gathered together into the Hospital by the government. Today, we have 28 experts (e.g. Chen Keji (academician of China Academy of Science), Li Lianda (academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering), Zhou Aixiang, Qian Zhenhuai, Xu Jianzhong, Zhou Jianzhong, etc.) and 180 professor and vice professor. With their efforts, the Hospital has become a comprehensive hospital with modern medical equipment and solid technical strength.. At present, the Hospital has 18 ward regions with 575 beds in Inpatient; has 54 clinical departments including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatric and 18 research departments. The daily outpatients reach more than 3700 people. Speaking of the Internal Medicine, it is particularly effective against coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, aplastic anemia, chronic granulocytic leukemia, senile dementia, osteoporosis, pulmonary-heart disease, bronchial asthma, diabetes, digestive diseases, renal and liver diseases, immunological diseases, and cancer. Especially, TCM therapies have got good effect in treating cholelithiasis, anorectal disease, peripheral vascular diseases, urinary diseases, male diseases in the department of surgery; trauma, cervical spondylopathy, slipped disc, necrosis of head of femur in the department of orthopedics; menstrual disorders, sterility, menopausal syndrome, endometriosis in the department of gynecology; nephritis and pneumonia, cardiac diseases in the department of pediatrics; stroke, facial paralysis and pain conditions in the department of acupuncture. The Hospital is equipped with advanced modern facilities including German Doly Dorsos DSA device, MRI, ECT, spiral CT, ELIPE-flow cytometer, and constructed with emergency room, clean BMT room, hemodialysis room, interventional center, CCU and ICU in inpatient building.
    In respect of scientific research, The Research & Development Center is the strong component part of Xi Yuan Hospital. It is also one of the most active and remarkable units of the national basic and clinical research for traditional medicine. In recent years, the Hospital has awarded more than 180 prizes for the researches of activating blood to remove blood stasis, TCM formula-syndrome pharmacological dynamics, GCP based new drug trails, herbal biological activity, restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention, hematology, gerontology, etc. More than 50 achievements have already been transferred to domestic/foreign factories, including Wei Yang Ning (an antiseptic ulcer drug) which technique has successfully been transferred to Japan. At present, besides the National Clinical and Experimental Center of New Medicine (Chinese Materia medica), the Hospital also includes the National Standardized TCM Pharmaceutical Laboratory, four AAA-grade laboratories (Pharmacology, Molecular Biology of Cardiovascular Diseases, Blood Cells and Pharmaceutical chemistry), three national TCM key departments of cardiology, hematology and pharmacology, and TCM Health Care Research Center. The Hospital has made co-operations with more than 100 scientific research institutions, and it is undertaking more than 100 research projects from the State, the Ministry and China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.
    The Hospital is a teaching base for Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and also for academic education in international acupuncture and Traditional medicine. At present, it has 2 postdoctoral workstations, 74 supervisors for postgraduate of Master and 30 for Doctor’s. In recent years, there are more than 200 postgraduates (140 for postgraduate of Master, 49 for Doctor’s and 18 for postdoctoral’s). Since 1985, 13 TCM training courses for doctors of Western Medicine were held and more than 600 trained professionals have become TCM-WM key members throughout China. Every year, the Hospital holds 2 TCM advanced courses for more than 100 people countrywide.
    As a part of International Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine of WHO, the Hospital won honor for Traditional Chinese Medicine by sending many TCM experts go abroad for medical service for state heads and the patients. Since 1955, the Hospital has received more than 1,000 foreign visiting groups from nearly 100 countries, and has received hundreds of foreign students/WHO students for short-term training programs. Meanwhile, every year, the Hospital has sent specialists for academic exchanges abroad.
    In 2005, the Hospital renamed as “Xi Yuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences” and has entered a new period. The overall expansion constructing project was approved by the State Development and Reform Commission at the end of 2006. Nearly 100,000 square meters of floor area (including the outpatient building, the medical departments and the inpatient building) will be built since 2008.. According to the state extension project, Xi Yuan Hospital will be developed a big TCM general hospital with traditional style and modern character in Haidian District. We will work for new development of the Hospital in the spirit of “Unity, Devotion, Truth-pursuing, and New-trails blazing” to make new contribution to TCM development and medical service. Meanwhile, we determine to earnestly implement the national strategy and highlight the characteristics of Traditional Chinese Medicine by strengthening its clinical advantages. We will continue to make more efforts to promote TCM and to enhance the health of people globally.
